Block of the Month

Quaking Aspen Quilt Guild is starting a new Block of the Month series for 2017-2018!  For newer members: the Block of the Month is a voluntary project for any member to do. You receive instructions for a new block once a month. You can make all of the blocks or any of them that you choose in your own fabrics.

This year’s Block of the Month is definitely a TWIST! Over the coming 10 months, the new BOM will be twisted to be a mini-quilt of the month. Or table topper, or wallhanging, or doll quilt–you decide! Maybe a mug rug, a place mat, or a tote bag? Any size not greater than the 24×30 NICU dimensions. These projects will also make great little gifts.

Each month you will receive an email with the pattern for that month’s block. The blocks are also available below. The block is suggestive of a theme. You may resize the block. You may use one or more. You may not even use the block but make your own creation based on the theme.

For AUGUST the theme is BACK-TO-SCHOOL, and the block is SCHOOLHOUSE. The mini-quilt might be one large block with a creative border. It might be a number of smaller blocks. How about a landscape including a schoolhouse? Or a funky portrait of a relieved parent after a summer of hot cranky children or a teacher preparing to return to the classroom? Use your memories of that day of the year and create to your heart’s content. Use your scraps and your imagination!

The goal is for everyone to participate at least once. You may make one during the year or make one every month. Please try it, have fun with it, and bring your creation to the guild meetings where we will display it whether complete or in progress.

You may save your blocks to combine into one creation at the end of the year. But be forewarned, the blocks may not be all the same size, and they definitely won’t be the same technique. Think about Jeannie’s quilt . . . are you up for it?
