January 21, 2021 Virtual January Meeting, Speaker Laura Wasilowki
Art Quilts: The Musical: Join Laura in celebrating the life of a quilt artist. Listen to her adventures in quilt making and hear traditional art quilt folk songs like “Everybody Gets Rejected Sometime” and the “Minnesota Quilter’s Polka”. It’s a quirky documentary featuring songs from the “Chicago School of Fusing Bond Fire Songbook”.
Laura is a textile artist and creator of hand-dyed fabrics and threads. Her pictorial art quilts are created from fused fabrics and are hand-embroidered or machine quilted. Her free-form embroideries share a similar style with these narrative quilts. Whimsical in nature, both textile art forms express her joy and love of creating art.
Laura is one of the founding members of the imaginary “Chicago School of Fusing,” which was founded in 1997 by Robbi Eklow to advocate and advance the fine art of fusing. Dedicated fusers- Robbi Eklow, Laura Wasilowski (now Dean of Corrections), and Melody Johnson- realized a need to proclaim their profession in an educational setting. They began teaching the fine art of fusing to a few forward thinking art quilters and soon awarded badges or certificates of graduation to their students. They now host extension classes throughout the world
