The Quilts of Valor Foundation has as its mission “to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts of Valor.” Guild members usually choose to make a quilt for the foundation individually. Information about the Quilts of Valor Foundation can be found on the Quilts of Valor website including QOV Quilt Requirements.
Quilts of Valor Block Drive
The Quilts of Valor organization has released its block of the year for 2023. It is asking for sewers to make this block and then send them to the national organization, where they can then be given to other sewers to put them together into quilts. The Guild doesn’t yet have a QOV representative, but a block drive is a way to still support the organization in its efforts to provide quilts to U.S. Service Members and Veterans.
This year’s block is a Split Back Star block in (you guessed it!) red, white, and blue. The pattern can be found on the Quilts of Valor website. No guidance is given on whether to use solids or prints. The sample on the pattern used tone-on-tone fabrics for the red and blue, and a solid for the white star. Marsha Lowenberg, who is leading this block drive, suggests solids or tone-on-tone or fabrics that read as solids for the blue and red background. For the white star, she suggests solid or white-on-white, or a scrappy look that uses different white fabrics. Fabric placement should be as in the sample block — a diagonal split with blue on one side and red on the other. The block will measure 12 1/2” square.
Will you join in making a block or two? Perhaps some UFO groups or other small groups could spend one meeting day making blocks. Or you can get together with a friend and turn shared red, white, and blue fabrics into blocks.
If you would like to participate, please make and return your 12 1/2” blocks to Marsha Loewenberg by June 15, 2023. Blocks can be brought to the Guild meetings or sent to Marsha at 1140 Columbine Way, Erie, CO 80516. Thank you very much! Marsha is looking forward to collecting a large pile of blocks!
